Home-made toys in the Solomon's

Hello everybody, I’m writing again from the Solomon Islands. Today, I would like to share some pictures of the interesting toys that I have found over here. As you can see below, there’s no need to go to the store and spend huge amounts of money; in fact, a little imagination can take you a long way!


The first toy speaks for itself. The second toy is made from the Sego palm. The leaves from that sego palm are used for the roofs of the houses. If you are still not convinced about the resourcefulness of the Solomon´s people see what they can make out of the trunk of a tree!

The problem in this country, though, is the lack of capital. People would like to start businesses and generate income but they need the money to start. SPBD empowers women by offering financial services to help them create a better future for themselves and their families.
How do we work? For a person to be eligible to become an SPBD member they have to be a woman, unemployed and wanting to start a business. In order to become a member they have to follow a 6 day course. During those 6 days, we show them how we operate. We explain basic terms such as credit and interest rates and the importance to pay on time. We help them create a business plan and to control their business expenses.
Often clients discover that the money they earned has gone and they don´t know what they spent it on. In response to this, we have developed a tool called “the financial diaries’. This consists of tracking the business income and expenses of each entrepreneurial endeavor and separating those from the household income and expenses. This way people can track their money and find out what it has been spent on. Once they know where the money has gone they can control their expenditures better.
We also encourage our members to save. Saving allows them to face emergencies and to plan their lives.
