SPBD is a network of microfinance organizations working in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and the Solomon Islands dedicated to eradicating poverty by empowering women in poor rural villages with the opportunity to start, grow and maintain sustainable, income generating micro-enterprises.

Our Impact

We have ambitious plans to add over 30,000 additional female micro-entrepreneurs over the next 5 years, and 75,000 in the next 10 years.

Samoa

Samoa Map

  3. Over 20,000 saving accounts and 8,000 members with death benefit coverage
  4. Financially sustainable since 2007
  5. Offers a range of loan products: group Microenterprise loans, Small/Medium Enterprise (SME) loans, Overseas Worker loans, Higher Education loans, and White Goods loans
  6. Offers a remittance product
  7. Offers Financial Education training for all members
  8. Encourages members to send their children to school. To support this goal, members may use a portion of their financing to pay for school-related expenses 

Tonga

  1. Over 5,500 women micro-entrepreneurs currently served on Tongatapu, Vava'u, Ha'apai and Eau'
  2. More than 54,000 loans disbursed since inception totaling over US$48 million
  3. Over 11,000 savings depositors and 5,000 members with death benefit coverage
  4. Financially sustainable since 2011
  5. Offers a range of loan products: group Microenterprise loans, Small/Medium Enterprise (SME) loans, and Higher Education loans
  6. Offers Financial Education training for all members
  7. Encourages our members to send their children to school. To support this goal, members may use a portion of their financing to pay for school-related expenses

Fiji

Fiji Map
  1. More than 6,500 women loan clients currently served on Viti Levu,  Vanua Levu, Ovalau, and Kadavu
  2. Over 55,000 loansdisbursed since inception totaling over US$33 million
  3. Over 9,500 savings accounts and 5,000 members with death benefit coverage
  4. Financially sustainable since 2018
  5. Offers a range of loan products: group Microenterprise loans, Small/Medium Enterprise (SME) loans, White Goods loans, and Higher Education loans
  6. Offers Financial Education training for all members
  7. Partners with Vodafone to provide mobile banking services to all members
  8. Encourages our members to send their children to school. To support this goal, members may use a portion of their financing to pay for school-related expenses

Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands Map
  1. More than 2,600 women loan clients currently served in Guadalcanal, Munda, and Gizo
  2. Over 24,000 loans disbursed since inception or US$15 million
  3. Over 8,000 savings accounts and 2,500 members with death benefit coverage
  4. Expected to become financial sustainable by 2021
  5. Offers the following loan products: group Microenterprise loans and Solar Lighting loans
  6. Offers Financial Education training for all members
  7. Encourages our members to send their children to school. To support this goal, members may use a portion of their financing to pay for school-related expenses

Vanuatu

  2. More than 11,000 loans disbursed since inception, worth over US$ 6 million
  3. Over 6,500 savings accounts and 4000 members with death benefit coverage

  7. Encourages our members to send their children to school. To support this goal, members may use a portion of their financing to pay for school-related expenses
 

Measurements of Success

SPBD is making a large impact such that members experience:

  • Higher income
  • Better housing conditions (electricity, running water, sanitation, upgraded roof and floor)
  • Enhanced education for children
  • Less vulnerability to personal and economic shocks due to our savings and insurance products
  • Enhanced self-esteem leading to a better standing in society and closer family relationships
